POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, Iowa — A long-standing record for the biggest blue catfish caught in Iowa has been broken.
In 2004, a state record was recorded for the biggest blue catfish caught in Iowa. That record fish weighed in at 101 lbs. and was 53 inches long. On Wednesday, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced that the over 20-year-old record was broken by George Thompson.
The DNR said that Thompson’s fish weighed in at 105 lbs. and was 60 inches long. Thompson caught the fish in the Missouri River, along the same stretch that the DNR says the previous state record fish had been caught.

Thompson fought with the fish for 35 minutes before landing it. The DNR said he put the fish in a live well with diffused oxygen while he traveled to have the fish certified as the new record. After being certified, the fish was released back into the Missouri River.
