(NEXSTAR) – While the price of owning a home continues to soar across the country, many are looking to rent in hopes of just finding an affordable place to have a roof over their heads.
The problem is, rental prices for apartments are rising as well, particularly in larger markets — but the situation here in the Des Moines metro is more favorable.
A new report from Zillow has found that it has become extremely difficult to find apartments that cost less than $1,000 per month in the 100 largest cities in the U.S.
In fact, among these 100 cities, only 13 have more than a third of their available apartments listed as under $1,000 per month, according to Zillow. Des Moines is one of those cities at 36.90%.
For the most part, living in the Midwest or the South offers the best chance at finding an affordable apartment in a major city.
According to Zillow, Wichita, Kansas, has the highest number of apartments costing less than $1,000 per month, with slightly more than 54% of apartments.
Not far behind is McAllen, Texas, at 50.6%, which is the only other city to have more than half of their apartments under $1,000.
Other cities with the largest percentage of apartments available at under $1,000 per month include Little Rock, Arkansas, Toledo, Ohio, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
