GRINNELL, Iowa — A Grinnell restaurant has earned a coveted accolade for one of its most popular menu items.
The Iowa Pork Producers Association on Friday announced Hometown Heroes as the winner of its 2025 Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin Contest. In addition to having the state’s tastiest tenderloin, the organization said the sports grill honors its community by showcasing local athletes and other community members in “hero” roles.

One of the judges in the contest, retired chef and culinary instructor Phil Carey, had strong words of praise for the winning sandwich. “Hometown Heroes was one of the first ones that we judged, and as we (the judging panel) left, we agreed that this one would be hard to beat. The pork was tender and juicy; it was evenly pounded and well-seasoned… the pork was the star of the show! It was made complete by being served hot on a toasted bun. It’s a great sandwich!”
Hometown Heroes was opened in 2019 by Paul and Laylyn Durr and partners Shannon and Todd Reding. It’s located at 908 Main Street in downtown Grinnell.
As the winners of the IPPA’s contest, the restaurant will be presented with a $500 cash prize, a plaque, and a banner on Friday at noon.
The runner-up in the contest, The 1854 in Gilbertville, will get a $250 cash prize and a plaque.
The three other finalists named to the top five earlier this month are:
- Dexfield Diner & Pub — Redfield
- Sugar’s Lounge & Diner — Council Bluffs
- Walker’s — Salix
