CARROLL COUNTY, Iowa — Roughly 5,000 gallons of hog manure was spilled in Carroll County on Monday, and some of the manure reached a tributary of a creek, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced.
The DNR said it was notified on Tuesday of a hog manure spill that occurred Monday evening near a hog confinement site in the 25000 block of 120th Street in Carroll. When personnel from the DNR Field Office in Atlantic arrived at the site they learned that roughly 5,000 gallons of hog manure was spilled when a hose blew while crews were applying the manure to fields, the DNR said.
The manure spill entered a tributary of Elk Run Creek; however, the DNR said that action was taken to prevent the manure from spreading further, including the placement of dams to contain the manure while pumping it out of the water and the use of corn stalks to soak up the manure on the ground. No dead fish have been observed.
The DNR said that an investigation into the manure spill is ongoing.
