Airports across country, including DSM airport, won’t play Noem video blaming Democrats for shutdown

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines International Airport along with several other airports across the country won’t be showing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s video blaming Democrats for the federal government shutdown.

Last week, the Transportation Security Administration announced it would be rolling out the video to airports across the country. According to the Associated Press, in the video Noem warns travelers about potential changes to operations at airports due to staffing limitations and TSA employees not being paid during the shutdown. She also blames Democrats for the shutdown and subsequent impacts in the video.

Many airports, including major airports like JFK International Airport, have announced they won’t be playing the video, with some airports saying it would violate their policies of not playing political messages in their facilities.

The Des Moines International Airport told WHO 13 on Tuesday that it also will not be playing the video. A spokesperson for the airport released the following statement about the decision:

“The Des Moines International Airport Authority will not be displaying advertising or videos related to the Federal government shutdown. Videos including references to political parties would also conflict with our policy prohibiting political advertising or messaging in the terminal. We recognize that air travel can be a stressful experience for some people, and our focus is to make the process of getting through the terminal as smooth and calming as possible for passengers.”

On Tuesday, the government shutdown extended into its 14th day. The Senate is expected to hold another vote for the House’s continuing resolution to end the shutdown Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Central Time. This will be the eighth vote on the measure. It has failed to pass during the previous votes.
