New Marshalltown mural includes all members of the community

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — Siriaco “Siricasso” Garcia has painted over 50 murals across Iowa, but he says this one is unique.

Garcia attended Marshalltown Community College about a decade ago, so painting a mural there was a full-circle moment for him.

Garcia made a point to gather input from students when designing the mural. QR codes were posted around campus asking students to submit their own designs and ideas. Several of those made it into the mural itself.

The mural is intended to make all members of the campus community and Marshalltown feel included. Varying sports are represented, including esports. There are also tributes to various cultures and backgrounds. Movement is a key focus of the mural, hoping to inspire students to “Keep Going.” Garcia painted the mural to be read from left to right, showcasing that despite differences and obstacles, students and end up as successful graduates.

The mural will be officially unveiled on the campus of Marshalltown Community College from 3-5 PM on Friday, October 10th. The event will feature food, drinks, dancing, and interactive art activities.
