93-year-old man identified as victim in eastern Iowa house fire

LINN COUNTY, Iowa — Officials have released the name of the man who was killed in a house fire in eastern Iowa over the weekend.

At around 2:24 a.m. on Sunday multiple agencies, including the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a report of a house fire in the 200 block of Olson Court in Fairfax, just southwest of Cedar Rapids. When first responders arrived, they found the home engulfed in flames.

According to the sheriff’s office, first responders arrived and found four individuals outside of the home. Two of the individuals were taken to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation but were later transferred to University of Iowa Hospital.

Once on scene, first responders were alerted that an elderly male had not escaped the burning home, the sheriff’s office said. A search of the home was conducted by firefighters, who located the man, dead, inside the home.

On Monday, the sheriff’s office identified the victim as 93-year-old Russell Olson.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
