Tama County homeowner injured during “asphalt scam”

TAMA COUNTY, Iowa — The Tama County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of an ongoing “asphalt scam” which resulted in one homeowner being injured.

According to authorities, over the past few days they have received reports of two separate incidents of asphalt crews approaching homes which appear to be scams. Authorities say in one instance a homeowner was injured after confronting the individuals, who then fled the scene.

The Tama County SO posted saying, “We respect the many legitimate asphalt companies that serve our area. This message is not about them. It is about protecting residents from individuals who mislead, overcharge, or cause harm.”

Authorities say if you are approached about asphalt work to call the Tama County Sheriff’s Office at 641-484-4111 before agreeing to anything. They also ask anyone who has been approached and has concerns to contact them.

In their post the sheriff’s office said, “The faster this information spreads, the less chance these crews have to take advantage of anyone else. The sooner we can identify who is legitimate and who is not the clearer it will be which businesses are doing honest work.”
