BRIGHTON, Iowa — An Iowa teen died after being accidentally shot while squirrel hunting on Saturday in rural Brighton.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said 17-year-old Carson Ryan, of Washington, was shot around 3:00 p.m. by another hunter who mistook him for a squirrel. Ryan was shot in the back of the head.
The DNR said Ryan was transported to UI Health Care Medical Center, where he later died.
The identity of the other hunter was not released. The Iowa DNR and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate.
Brighton is about 16 miles northeast of Fairfield.
