Des Moines police release raw videos of September shooting of suspect

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department has released videos from a shooting last month that injured two officers and resulted in a suspect’s death.

The use of deadly force in the shooting death of Joshua Green on September 16th was determined to be legally justified by the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, following an investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The AG’s review was released on Friday.

The dashcam and body camera video released by the Des Moines Police Department on Monday shows the traffic stop leading up to the shooting and the shooting itself. DMPD created a summary review of the video that was edited for time and content, leaving out the more graphic images, which can be viewed on the department’s YouTube page.

DMPD also released the raw incident video to the media. It is graphic in nature and is not suitable for all audiences.

Senior Police Officers Cade Moritz and Jacob Boekoff were shot by Green during the incident. Officer Boekoff was shot in the arm. His injuries weren’t life-threatening but the wound did require surgery.

Officer Moritz was shot in the head. He was in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery, followed by several days in the hospital. He was released to a rehabilitation facility for a short stay.

Both officers are now at home recovering. They remain on paid administrative assignment.

The other officers involved in the shooting, Special Officer Frankie Contreras and Captain Chad Steffen, are also on paid administrative assignment. That is department policy following an on-duty critical or traumatic incident.

The department says a Shooting Review Committee will be convened about the incident, as part of the official administrative review process.
