DAVENPORT, Iowa — A 41-year-old man was in custody Sunday after a Davenport incident left a 49-year-old woman dead, according to a news release from the Davenport Police Department.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Davenport Police, Fire and Medic EMS responded to a residence in the 3800 block of West Locust Street for a report of a domestic disturbance with a victim bleeding from the head, the release and Scott County arrest affidavits say.
Outside the residence, responders found a 49-year-old woman suffering from life-threatening injuries. “Information relayed to responding personnel was that the subject appeared to have been hit in the head with an object, by another family member on scene,” according to Scott County arrest affidavits.
Emergency medical aid was administered to the woman at the scene. She was transported to MercyOne Genesis Medical Center, where she died from her injuries, affidavits show.
Affidavits say an investigation indicates that a disturbance occurred where the victim was assaulted by 41-year-old Donald Brentise Jr., who was taken into custody at the scene.
He faces charges of first-degree murder, going armed with intent, and interference with a weapon, according to the release and court records.
Affidavits show Brentise, “was found to have struck the victim in the head with a hammer. (Brentise) stated in a post-Miranda interview that he struck the victim three times in the head with a hammer, while on the above-mentioned property.”
Brentise “knowingly resisted and obstructed uniformed law enforcement personnel from performing their lawful duties upon their arrival to the above-mentioned incident,” affidavits show. “(He) did so by refusing to comply with orders to exit his residence to aid in the investigation.”
After Brentise was read his Miranda Rights, he said he was in possession of the dangerous weapon (hammer) used in this incident when police attempted to make contact with him. “The hammer was observed near (Brentise) upon taking him into custody,” affidavits say.
Brentise, who is in custody in Scott County Jail, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 7 in Scott County Court.
