Bondurant raises $1 million for historic silo redevelopment project

BONDURANT, Iowa — Bondurant has raised more than $1 million for the Silo Commons Project which will redevelop the city’s historic silos into an arts and culture center.

The City of Bondurant says the Silo Commons Project will redevelop the former Landus Cooperative site in downtown Bondurant into a 24-acre center for arts, culture, recreation and community gathering.

Silo Commons is expected to feature a permanent amphitheater built directly into the silo structure, a 110-foot rock-climbing tower, and an event lawn capable of hosting around 850 guests. Public art, bouldering features, murals, and light installations will be featured throughout the grounds.

The money was gathered through a $749,000 Destination Iowa grant award from the Iowa Economic Development Authority and a $210,000 Legacy Grant from Prairie Meadows, along with contributions from residents and local businesses.

As part of the project, the city has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) seeking artists or artist teams to design and install a large-scale mural on the east face of the historic silo cluster, which will rise to approximately 185 feet.

“Silo Commons is about reimagining Bondurant’s history and creating a cultural destination in Central Iowa,” said Bondurant Mayor Doug Elrod. “This mural will be a defining feature of the Grain District, connecting our community’s agricultural heritage with its creative and innovative future.”

Minimal construction began on the site in 2025, with the project expected to be in full swing with the addition of new streets and the expansion of the Chichaqua Valley Trail in 2026. The City of Bondurant says the project is expected to open in 2027.
