DES MOINES, Iowa — Over 100 people gathered at East High School’s baseball fields Wednesday evening for a candlelight vigil honoring Santiago Rhone, a 15 year old baseball player and student at East High School who died after being hit by a motorcycle.
Rhone’s sister, Nakiyah Keller, said that her brother always pushed her to be the best she could be.
“Growing up with my brother was probably the most amazing thing ever. He was my little brother and as, as an older sister. He pushed me. He pushed me to do better. He pushed me to get where he wanted his whole entire family to be, including the family and the community,” Keller said.
Rhone’s friend and teammate, Marquise Pierce, said that Rhone motivated him to be a better athlete.
“In the batting cage, it was just like, like, just always laughing and joking and like, he’s just a great guy. He pushes you like him. Like, really, like if you mess up, he’s really there to pick you up and make you a better person in general,” Pierce said.
Rhone’s funeral is scheduled for Friday, September 26. To learn more about funeral services visit Hamilton Funeral Home’s website.
