WINDSOR HEIGHTS, Iowa — A Windsor Heights woman has been arrested for allegedly pocketing nearly $750,000 in payments from her insurance company that were intended to be repaid to Iowa Medicaid.
Carrie Cather, 48, is charged with first-degree theft and ongoing criminal conduct in the case, according to court documents filed in August. She was booked into the Polk County Jail on Tuesday.
The criminal complaint claims that between February 2020 and December of 2022, Cather cashed 30 checks written to her by Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, and intended to be repaid to Iowa Medicaid, but kept the money for herself. The checks totaled $744,760.29.
The complaint said each check had an explanatory statement attached, warning that Cather was responsible for making sure the amount of the check was paid to her health care provider.
Bond for Cather has been set at $20,000 and a preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for October 3rd.
