How much rain fell across central Iowa overnight and how much is on the way this weekend

DES MOINES, Iowa – Scattered showers and storms have dropped decent amounts of rain across central Iowa, and more rain chances are headed our way.

“Scattered” has been the key word to describe the rain we’ve seen over the last couple of days. The 24-hour rain totals from 7 AM Thursday to 7 AM Friday reflect that:

  • Centerville: 0.81″
  • Marshalltown: 0.73″
  • Grinnell: 0.62″
  • Oskaloosa: 0.58″
  • Des Moines: 0.47″
  • Ankeny: 0.27″
  • Carroll: 0.20″
  • Lamoni: 0.13″
  • Creston: 0.12″
  • Fort Dodge: 0.11″
  • Pella: 0.10″
  • Osceola: 0.10″
  • Algona: 0.09″
  • Knoxville: 0.07″
  • Ottumwa: 0.04″
  • Iowa Falls: 0.03″

Most of the shower activity wrapped up on Friday morning. The rest of the day will bring chances for an isolated pop-up shower or storm. Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy with skies clearing up somewhat. Rain chances increase this evening and into the overnight with an area of more widespread rain arriving.

Rain lasts through a decent part of Saturday morning. Showers become more scattered to isolated through the afternoon. By Saturday evening, skies should clear up, and mostly dry conditions will be in place Saturday night into Sunday. Some patchy fog will be possible Sunday morning, followed by sunny conditions during the day.

Temperatures hold fairly steady through the weekend. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s on Friday and drop a few degrees on Saturday. Temperatures rise back near the 80° mark on Sunday.

More rain arrives next week. The first several days of the work week will bring scattered showers and storms. The scattered nature of the rain will make it difficult to pinpoint specific rain totals for different areas, but a general one to two inches of rain is possible over the next week.
