Oktoberfest celebration kicks off Friday at Water Works Park in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — Get your steins ready because the Oktoberfest party starts this weekend at Water Works Park.

The Des Moines Biergarten is holding its first official Oktoberfest celebration Friday night through Sunday. A portion of the revenue from the event is going to the Water Works Park Foundation to support the park’s operations.

Festivities start Friday night at the Iowa State Capitol with the Golden Keg Bicycle Ride. Participants will depart from there at 6:00 p.m. and head to Water Works Park. Then at 6:30 p.m. the party really kicks off with the tapping of the Golden Keg by Des Moines’ Mayor Connie Boesen.

The band Guilty Pleasures will perform, starting at 7:00 p.m., to cap off the night.

On Saturday, you’ll see a familiar face at the park, WHO 13’s own Justin Surrency, who is emceeing some of the events. He’ll cover the sack race at 2:30 tomorrow, then the pretzel toss at 4:00 p.m., and finally he’ll host an epic showdown — the stein holding contest. That starts at 6:30 p.m.

It will be three days of fun at Water Works Park. The festival is open from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily. You can check out the full schedule of Des Moines Oktoberfest events here.
