Heavy ovenight rain led to flash flood warning in west central Iowa

Thunderstorms developed in western Iowa on Tuesday evening and never left. It was a night of stormy conditions from Western Dallas County through Guthrie County, Audubon, and up towards Carroll County.

The heaviest rain fell in Guthrie County, near Guthrie Center and Panora. This is where radar estimates of more than 5″ of rain fell. A Flash Flood Warning was in effect until 7:15 this morning for that area.

Here are some of the early preliminary automated rainfall amounts for the last 24 hours through 7 AM.

Here are a few 7 AM measurements submitted from weather reporters in local communities on cocorahs.org:

  • Fort Dodge 4.25″
  • Boone 1.10″
  • Perry 1.06″
  • Lytton 0.95″
  • Osceola 0.42″
  • Dallas Center 0.19″
  • Waukee 0.14″
  • Altoona 0.12″
  • Urbandale 0.05″

A slow-moving low-pressure system that is stalling out over the Upper Midwest will bring more rounds of rain and thunderstorms through Iowa. We will be stuck in this weather pattern into the weekend.
