Construction sparks fire at Ankeny church

ANKENY, Iowa — Firefighters were called to an Ankeny church on Tuesday morning to put out a fire caused by some construction work.

Ankeny Fire Department members were called to the Prairie Ridge Church at 825 NW 36th Street around 9:15 a.m. When they arrived, a small amount of black smoke was visible coming from an exterior wall of the church that was under renovation.

“When we arrived, we noticed that part of the building that was under construction, they were doing some welding and caused a small fire in the wall,” said Dan Schellhase, Deputy Fire Chief.

Firefighters had to cut several holes to get to the fire, and Schellhase said it was challenging. An aerial ladder and a mobile elevated work platform were used by firefighters to access the roof and upper wall areas.

The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes, and crews were able to leave the scene about 90 minutes after the initial call.

An on-site pre-school was evacuated while firefighters worked to put out the fire.

No injuries were reported from the fire.
