MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — A century-old mansion in Marshalltown is set to be demolished.
The Victorian-style house has been called the Newton Carmean Mansion and the Hatcher Mansion, but is commonly known as the Queen of Hearts Mansion. It got this nickname from its heart-shaped windows. It had a total of 18 rooms, including a ballroom located on the third floor.
The home is believed to have been built in 1902. The house was in the direct path of the 2018 Marshalltown tornado and was further damaged by the 2020 derecho.
Clayton Ender, the Assistant Director of Housing and Community Development for the City of Marshalltown, said the house has been vacant since the natural disasters.
Earlier this year, there was a partial roof collapse near the front porch. As a result, the city condemned the house as a dangerous building and ordered the owners to either demolish or repair it.
“It’s unfortunate. It’s a little sad, but we do have a responsibility as a city to make sure that buildings are safe for those that occupy it as well as the general public that may be near it,” said Ender.
Restoring the house is believed to cost over $1 million, but the home would only be valued at $500,000 once fully restored. Ultimately, the homeowners decided to demolish it.
