Security expert weighs in on Charlie Kirk’s shooting death

DES MOINES, Iowa — Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist, was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon during an event at Utah Valley University.

Tom Conley, the president and CEO of The Conley Group, a private security company, said that the event today did not have adequate security.

“Adequate security means equilibrium between the amount of security assets needed to reduce the risk to an, to an acceptable level. Charlie Kirk had, I think two or three, maybe six of his security people. I heard the UVU chief say that they had six police officers, wholly inadequate, just wholly inadequate,” Conley said.

Conley said that people often don’t take security seriously enough.

“The big problem is that people don’t take their security seriously. So, security is always too much until that moment. It’s not enough. And really a security detail really needs to be based on the risk. What’s the risk? What’s the risk profile? And then, you know, staff up not only personnel, but intelligence, electronics staff up to that level,” Conley said.

Utah Valley Police say that the shooter fired from a rooftop near the event Kirk was speaking at. Conley said that rooftops are critical to secure before events.

“You have to have security mechanism, whether it’s visual, means CCTV being actively monitored, or a police sniper on the highest level. And they have to be able to see things. And if they see somebody getting on the roof, then they have to call somebody and interdict with that person before they get to a position to be able to, to fire a shot,” Conley said.

Conley is concerned that universities may cancel future speaking events due to Charlie Kirk’s death.

“My concern is that universities will decline to have events in the future because they can’t adequately secure them. So, hey, the risk is just too high, which is a backdoor way of, of really stifling freedom of speech. Whether you agreed or disagreed with Charlie Kirk, he did not espouse violence. He was about ideas,” Conley said.

Conley hopes the public will better fund security in the future.

“We see this with school security, the shootings happen and everybody is up in arms and they should be. But then things largely go back to normal. Nothing ever changes. So there’s a certain amount of assets that it takes to create a condition of adequate security. And people simply don’t fund that. You know, they just don’t fund it,” Conley said.
