FAIRFIELD, Iowa — Two people were arrested and charged with animal neglect after 61 animals were removed from their Fairfield home.
The Fairfield Police Department says they were notified August 27, 2025, of possible animal neglect occurring at a home in the 200 block of Cardinal Drive. The report stated that a large number of animals were being kept in poor and potentially dangerous living conditions.
Authorities opened an investigation to determine the validity of the allegations and were able to find enough evidence to secure a search warrant of the premises. The Fairfield PD, with assistance from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and the Fairfield Veterinary Clinic, executed that search warrant on Tuesday.
Officers and animal welfare professionals entered the home and discovered conditions described as “neglectful, unsanitary, and hazardous to both the animals and anyone residing in the home.” Authorities found animals confined to overcrowded kennels, with several sharing enclosures. The animals were covered in feces and lacked adequate food and water, police say.
Thirty-eight dogs, 10 cats and 13 various small animals were removed from the residence. The animals have been placed into the care of various animal welfare organizations for treatment and rehabilitation.
The Fairfield Police Department says 44-year-old Ellen Marie Telleen and 26-year-old Krysta Marie Telleen were both arrested on 48 counts of Animal Neglect. Ellen and Krysta were transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility, but have since posted bond and been released.
