Child playing with lighter allegedly sparks bedroom fire in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Iowa — The Knoxville Fire Department responded to a house fire they say was started by a child playing with a lighter.

According to the Knoxville Fire Department, fire crews were dispatched to the 700 block of W. Larson Street on reports of a structure fire around 7:36 p.m. Upon arrival crews found smoke coming from the doors and and windows of the home.

Crews made entry into the home and located the source of the fire in the bedroom. Authorities say an aggressive attack ensued and crews were able to keep the flames contained to the room of origin.

A search of the home was conducted and nobody was found inside. Knoxville FD says a tenant was home at the time but was able to exit the home due to working smoke detectors.

Authorities say the investigation revealed the fire was started in the bedroom closet by a child that was playing with a lighter.

Knoxville FD says the bedroom suffered fire, heat, smoke and water damage while the rest of the home sustained only smoke damage.
