MITCHELLVILLE, Iowa — Two people were arrested for forgery after police say they used counterfeit bills at a Dollar General.

On Thursday, Mitchellville Police Department officers were called to the Dollar General, located at 307 Center Avenue S, on reports of individuals attempting to use counterfeit currency.

Store managers provided officers on scene with descriptions of the alleged suspects and their vehicle. The information was then shared with surrounding law enforcement agencies. Shortly after, the suspects’ vehicle was located traveling westbound on Interstate 80 near Menlo, Iowa.

Iowa State Patrol troopers conducted a traffic stop and found bundles of counterfeit $100 bills concealed inside the vehicle’s dashboard, according to Mitchellville police. Authorities say narcotics, including marijuana, were also recovered from the vehicle.

Authorities arrested 20-year-old Carl Rainey and 29-year-old Phillip Slaughter, both from Indianapolis, on forgery-related charges. Rainey and Slaughter are being held at the Polk County Jail on two counts of Forgery each.

Mitchellville police say the investigation has revealed that the counterfeit bills may have been used in Newton and the Iowa City area. Anyone with information is asked to contact Mitchellville police.
