Road rage led to shooting in West Des Moines, court documents say

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Road rage led to a shooting in West Des Moines last week according to court documents.

On the morning of August 15, the West Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the 5800 block of Westown Parkway. According to the WMDPD, responding officers located shell casings at the scene, but the two vehicles believed to be involved in the shooting had left the area.

That same day the WMDPD arrested and charged Christian Schuck in connection to the shooting investigation. Schuck was charged with attempted murder and intimidation with a dangerous weapon.

Court documents filed in the case revealed that a reported road rage incident led up to the shooting.

According to a criminal complaint, the victim attempted to flee from Schuck by changing his direction of travel, driving through a yellow light, and stopping on an adjacent road. The complaint states that Schuck continued to follow the victim and stopped his vehicle near the victim’s. The victim then drove through a round-a-bout, fleeing for a second time.

When later questioned about the incident, court documents say that Schuck told police that the victim had displayed a gun at him before driving through the round-a-bout. A criminal complaint states that as the victim drove through the round-a-bout, Shuck, armed with his own gun, fired three shots at the victim. Only two bullets hit the victim’s vehicle, one on the hood and one on the driver’s side door, the complaint states.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Schuck remains booked in the Polk County Jail on a $35,000 cash/surety bond. A preliminary hearing for the case has been scheduled for August 26.

According to court records, while being questioned by officers Schuck allegedly admitted to being involved in another road rage incident in Indiana where he drew his firearm. Court records state Schuck was also allegedly involved in a road rage incident in Iowa County.
