Body recovered from Des Moines River Monday morning

DES MOINES, Iowa — A body discovered in the Des Moines River Sunday night was recovered Monday morning by Des Moines Fire Department crews.

Sgt. Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer for the Des Moines Police Department, said the body was freed from the dam around 9:00 a.m. and the DMFD was able to move it to a safer location to complete the recovery.

DMPD officers and Des Moines Fire Department rescue crews were called to the Women of Achievement Bridge shortly after 9:00 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a body in the water.

Those first on the scene confirmed there was a deceased person in the water, trapped in the rolling boil of the low-head dam. Because of the nearness to the dam, the swift current, and the darkness, it was determined that crews would wait on recovery attempts until Monday morning.

Sgt. Parizek said police are looking into whether the body in the river is connected to a report received in the early morning hours of August 10th about a person in the river. At that time, emergency responders were unable to locate anyone.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the death. More details on the identity of the person are expected to be released following confirmation and notification of family members.
