‘Hidden in Plain Sight’ exhibit educates parents on youth substance abuse

DES MOINES, Iowa — There’s an eye-opening exhibit at the Iowa State Fair that is educating parents about youth substance abuse.

It’s called “Hidden in Plain Sight,” put on by YSS. It replicates a teenager’s bedroom and challenges visitors to identify evidence of drug or alcohol use.

There are 91 different items that signal risky behavior. While tough for adults to spot, those in charge say the items are easy for kids to get.

That’s why YSS President and CEO Andrew Allen says awareness is crucial for prevention and, if needed, intervention.

“We know that the data shows if you can delay onset of first use of drugs or alcohol until age 18, there’s almost no shot kids will have an issue. If they drink before age 15, there’s a 40-percent chance,” Allen said. “And so, what we’re doing today is showing parents and caregivers where kids might be hiding stuff in their bedroom. I think it’s important to have conversations. It’s important to have information as family members. And it’s important to talk to kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.”

This was a collaboration with the Iowa Department of Public Safety. If you’d like to learn more about the group behind it, visit YSS.org.
