DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa State Fair is nearing its end, but food vendors don’t slow down until the last minute of the fair.
This year, 65 new foods were introduced for fairgoers to try. WHO 13s Skyler Stamps tried four of the new foods to see if they earned “Skyler’s Stamp of Approval.”
Josephine’s Donuts is new this year to the Iowa State Fair. Owners Gentry and Emily Miller made the trek from South Bend, Indiana, with their nearly 1,200 ft. portable donut stand. The day starts at 6 a.m. with making dough to serve around 5,000 donuts daily during the fair.
Leiman’s Pizzeria has been a staple at the Iowa State Fair for over 20 years. The booth makes the trip from Texas, but local help is always hired for the stretch of the fair. This year, they introduced the chicken pickle ranch pizza. Owners said almost half of their pizza sales are the chicken pickle ranch pizza, beating out classics like pepperoni and cheese.
Dairy Zone entered its second year with a stand at the Iowa State Fair. Along with that, a top 11 new fair food in the butter cow tornado. The treat includes vanilla ice cream, butterscotch mix-ins, chunks of butter cake, and a white chocolate molded cow on the top. Dairy Zone also has a location open year-round on Des Moines’ east side near the fairgrounds.
Dairy Zone was also awarded the “Choose Iowa” favorite fair food award on Friday.
JR’s SouthPork Ranch entered the fair with many new fair foods and drinks this year. One of the new fair foods was the chicken pickle ranch rocket. The new food includes white chicken brined in pickle juice for 48 hours, then assembled alternating chicken pieces and pickle slices on a skewer. JR’s also won the best new alcoholic fair drink with the “Pink Pony Cooler.”
