Iowa driver’s licenses, state IDs can now be used with Apple Wallet

AMES, Iowa (KCAU) — Iowans now have a new way to present their state IDs.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Wednesday that Iowa driver’s licenses and state IDs can now be added to the Apple Wallet app on iPhones and Apple Watches. This will allow Iowans to present their IDs at certain TSA checkpoints, businesses, and venues in the state.

IDs can also be accepted by using other iOS apps, including Tap2iD Mobile, VeriScan, and Mobile ID Verify, for in-person age verification, the Iowa DOT says.

IDs can be added to Apple Wallet by pressing the Add (+) button at the top of the screen inside the app and selecting “Driver’s License or State ID.” According to the Iowa DOT, any provided information is securely encrypted, and Apple and the DOT can’t find out who a user is presenting their ID to.

Another option for Iowans is the Iowa Mobile ID app, which also keeps a digital version of a user’s ID on their phone. The DOT released the app back in Oct. 2023.

Iowa driver’s licenses or state IDs can also be added to the Samsung Wallet app on Samsung phones.
