Iowa State Fair debuts first-ever lineman rodeo

DES MOINES, Iowa — A new free event is making its debut at the Elwell Family Park at the Iowa State Fair on Friday.

The Iowa State Fair is bringing the first-ever lineman rodeo to the state fair and the state of Iowa itself.

The event comprises four different events with 15 teams of three competing against one another for the title and the championship belt buckle.

Setup started on Thursday morning with crews installing 29 poles in four lines for each of the competitions.

Chaz Allen, Executive Director of the Iowa Utility Association, explained what the four different tasks are for competitors.

“The first row they’re going to go up and do a cut-out, change out,” Allen said. “Second pole is a two-phase where they’re going to drop both lines and flip them to the other side. (Next), is a speed climb with an egg in your mouth — then the fifth one over here is a hurt man rescue and they have to get them to the ground and begin compressions and CPR.”

After the end of the time trials, the team with the fastest times will be awarded handmade champion belt buckles.

The event kicks off at 8 a.m. Thursday morning and will go until approximately 2 p.m. The event is free to attend with an Iowa State Fair admission ticket.
