Des Moines teen receives prison sentence for fatally stabbing brother

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines teen was sentenced to prison on Wednesday for the fatal stabbing of his brother in 2024.

On June 11 officers with the Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing at 926 Oakridge Drive. First responders at the scene discovered a 19-year-old man, identified as Abdelmagid Elzubeir, suffering from a stab wound to his neck. Abdelmagid was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Shortly after the stabbing, the DMPD released the preliminary findings from the investigation, which determined that Abdelmagid was stabbed by his younger brother — 16-year-old Mohamed Elzubeir. Mohamed was charged with first-degree murder, causing his case to be automatically waived to adult court.

According to the Polk County Attorney’s Office, Mohamed told the court that his brother had picked on him and bullied him for years, and that prior to the stabbing his brother was yelling at him and pushed him.

During a court hearing on Wednesday Mohamed pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter, the attorney’s office announced. Because Mohamed was a teen when the stabbing took place, the attorney’s office said the judge had a range of sentencing options, but District Judge Joseph Seidlin ultimately decided to sentence Mohamed to up to 10 years in prison.

Judge Seidlin said he came to this decision due to Mohamed’s reported “troubled history of managing his behaviors.” According to the attorneys’ office, Mohamed was involved in a car crash in 2021 that caused a traumatic brain injury that exacerbated his behavioral issues.
