Des Moines School Board Chair Jackie Norris announces U.S. Senate bid

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines School Board Chair Jackie Norris, a Democrat, is entering the race to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate.

In a video posted to her campaign website Tuesday morning, Norris and her supporters spoke about her background in education as a government teacher and her Washington experience, serving as Chief of Staff for former First Lady Michelle Obama.

After coming to Iowa in 1998 to work on the campaign to elect Tom Vilsack as Governor, Norris became a high school government teacher, working in communities like Perry, Ames, and Johnston.

As the Chair of the Des Moines School Board, Norris was at the forefront of an effort to ban cell phones in the classroom and touted the results of a pilot program at Hoover High School.

“How awesome is it that you not only see mental health improvements in our young people, but you see academic outcomes improve as well as a result of a cell phone policy,” said Norris in the campaign video.

She also highlighted one of her priorities, “As a teacher and a school board member, you see the invisible burdens families are carrying. Take the Medicaid cuts. Who’s it impacting? Middle class families right now, they can’t afford to put food on the table. We have to find a way to make things more affordable for families.”

Norris has previously worked with Republican President George H. W. Bush’s Points of Light organization, where her focus was to expand corporate volunteerism.

She is the President and owner of the Horizon Group.

Jackie and her husband, John, have three sons.

Three other Democrats have already announced their campaigns for U.S. Senate: State Sen Zach Wahls, Rep. J.D. Scholten, and Nathan Sage, former Director of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce.

Republican Senator Joni Ernst has not yet announced whether she will seek reelection.
