NASCAR drivers face new challenges at Newton Speedway

NEWTON, Iowa — NASCAR drivers are gearing up for a challenging race at the Newton Speedway this weekend as they face varying conditions.

The Iowa Speedway, known as the fastest short track race on the planet, was partially repaved in 2024, creating varying grip levels. Since last year, the changes in the road have settled and created new challenges.

Ahead of the race, drivers shared their reaction to the changed track and what they expect going in.

“The color of the pavement, the new pavement has changed quite a bit so I imagine the grip level has changed, it could be more or less, I don’t really know yet. But, it’s going to be different,” said Kyle Larson.

“Anytime you go to somewhere for the first time, it’s kind of a wide-open book for everybody, but as you continue to go there, everybody gets better and better and the fields tighter and tighter,” said Chase Briscoe. “It’ll be unique this year to try and understand how much different the track is going to be.”

Last year, the repaved road contributed to Christopher Bell and Austin Cindric hitting the wall, with several other drivers experiencing tire issues.

Another variable driver’s face this year is the expected cooler weather conditions. Last year, the drivers faced temperatures in the high 90s, while this year the forecast shows a drop to the mid-70s.

The drivers will take to the track Sunday for the Cup Series, where more than 35,000 fans are expected to attend.

The Iowa Corn 350 will take place Sunday at the Iowa Speedway at 3:30 p.m. ET.
