GRANGER, Iowa — The 23rd annual Highway 141 Garage Sale officially kicks off on Friday, and there will be garage sales all throughout a 170-mile stretch from Grimes to Sloan.
Twenty-two towns along the highway are participating, and organizers say 350 sales are registered. A full list of all registered sales in each city can be found online. Some list what kinds of items shoppers can score deals on.
Some garage sales aren’t registered, so shoppers can even find some secret deals.
The Highway 141 Garage Sale even attracts many people from outside of Iowa.
“I think it’s great the towns, especially some of these smaller towns along the highway,” said volunteer Melissa Mann. “I’ve got people that contact me from Minnesota, from Nebraska, from Kansas City. I mean, the towns will be buzzing like crazy during 141 weekend.”
In previous years, sheriffs have directed traffic along the highway and throughout these small towns due to the large number of people participating in the 170-mile event.
This is a huge deal for residents along the highway. Tim Bogardus and his family have participated in the sale for 14 years.
They sell all kinds of fishing gear and sporting apparel out of their home in Granger. While the sale officially takes place on Friday and Saturday, Bogardus opened yesterday and will stay open until Sunday.
“You’re going to find a lot of unique stuff that you’re not going to find at the big box stores that you’re going to say, ‘Wow,’ And that’s why people come to these sales because the unique items that we have,” said Bogardus.
Bogardus’ sale will be open Friday from 9 a.m. through 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. at 11635 NW 115th Street in Granger.
