Fueling more storms: Third round of overnight storms tonight

IOWA — Severe weather moved across northern Iowa last night as a complex of storms brought damaging winds and heavy rain.

Wind gusts up to 80 mph were reported with the storm in northeast Iowa counties. Algona even reported a 75 mph gust around 11:30 Monday night.

The rain came down across northern and eastern Iowa. The highest amount fell with a severe thunderstorm in the Grinnell area after 1 AM.

It will be another hot day today with a Heat Advisory again in effect from noon to 8 PM for southern Iowa. This is where it will be the most uncomfortable, with heat indices up near 105°.

The heat and humidity will fuel overnight storms again tonight. This will be the third overnight round of storms in a row, and they could again be severe. The main threat will be damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

The storms will form in Nebraska and South Dakota this afternoon and evening and push into Iowa after 10 PM. The storms will bring heavy rainfall and gusty thunderstorm winds into Fort Dodge and Carroll around 1 AM, the Des Moines area by 4 AM, and Centerville and Ottumwa by 7 AM.

The rain may come down fast and heavy and lead to flash flooding in the early morning of Wednesday. Here’s a look at estimated rainfall totals tonight through Wednesday evening. 1 to 2″ will be common, with some localized 3 to 5″ amounts possible.
