DES MOINES, Iowa — Water Works Park is making some changes to help with congestion during concert nights. This comes after several complaints of people waiting up to three hours in lines at the Treaty Oak Revival show back in June.
The lack of parking, construction on Fleur Drive and the road closure to George Flagg Parkway contribute to the chaos.
Water Works Park is rolling out some additions Thursday night for the Beck show with the Des Moines Symphony. They are offering additional parking across Fleur Drive at a parking lot on Bell Avenue where there is also a shuttle to take people to the park entrance. Those are available to purchase on the Water Works Park website.
They’re also bringing in more police officers to help control traffic, including on Bell and SW 30th Street, where the construction detour runs through.
“There’s a lot of road construction happening in and around in Des Moines Waterworks Park, and we’ll follow those detour signs the city of Des Moines put in place as we can get people into the park as quickly as possible,” Water Works Park Executive Director Chris Burch said. “I would encourage all of our guests and fans that are looking forward to a wonderful evening with Beck and the Des Moines Symphony tonight to have a little extra patience, provide a little extra time if they can, as they make their way into the park and follow the attendance instructions and signs as they make their way to Des Moines Water Works.”
They’re also encouraging people to use the bike valet, and the ride share areas.
Back in June videos went viral, and people flooded the comment sections on the Water Works Park social media pages after that Treaty Oak Revival show. The event organizers want people to know, they’re listening to everyone’s feedback.
“What we find is that each show provides a unique experience, depending on the genre of the show, depending on the number of fans and ticket sales that we have, depending on the length of the show, depending on the weather condition. All of these factors can come into play, and we work on what we can control and what we can’t control.,” Burch said. “But when we hear feedback about some lines, etc. for issues, we’ll look at adding more resources to try to shorten those lines based on the number of tickets, sales and fans that we have coming tonight. We believe that we’re adequately prepared for the show this evening and I think everyone that comes to Des Moines Waterworks and Beck with the symphony is in for a real treat tonight at Des Moines Waterworks Park.”
The doors opened at 5 p.m. with the show beginning at 6:30.
