IOWA (KCAU) — Authorities have confirmed two deaths along the RAGBRAI LII route, with one person being identified.
According to the Jackson County, Minnesota Sheriff’s Office, on July 21 at around 8:13 a.m., they got a 911 call of a rider who collapsed on Jackson County Road 4, west of MN 86.
Officials said that Kelly Paul, 54, of Texas was tended to by a doctor, surgeon, and a physician’s assistant within seconds of collapsing. All of them were taking part in this year’s RAGBRAI.
Paul was transported to a Spirit Lake hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Another death on the route was reported in Estherville on July 21.
Police Chief Brent Shatto said at about 7:40 a.m., they got a report of a 63-year-old man who was semi-conscious and vomiting. Officers arrived at South 8th Street and 1st Avenue South and located the man with no pulse.
Authorities said officers started CPR until the ambulance arrived and continued life-saving measures. The man was taken to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead. His identity is not being released at this time.
