WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The Department of Justice is now in talks with Ghislaine Maxwell’s attorneys to have her testify about what she knows regarding Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of girls. It comes after the DOJ released a memo saying the infamous Epstein list of clients does not exist.
The announcement created a firestorm of backlash from MAGA supporters and shook the political ground on Capitol Hill as the debate has infiltrated most of the legislative business, including an early dismissal for lawmakers.
“I don’t really follow that too much. It’s sort of a witch hunt… a continuation of the witch hunt,” said President Donald Trump.
The DOJ says the president instructed it to release all credible evidence. Meanwhile, House Republicans are moving ahead, voting to subpoena Maxwell to testify on what she may know.
“Do what the president asked. Release those records. I think that’s a great start,” said Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.).
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) wants to leave this to the White House and instead he’s sending members home early for August recess.
“There’s no purpose for Congress to push an administration to do something they’re already doing… This is for political games,” said Johnson.
Democrats accuse Johnson of stalling and sheltering those who could be involved.
“They’re ending this week early because they’re afraid to cast votes on the Epstein issue,” said Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.).
Maxwell has yet to be scheduled for testimony and the pressure on lawmakers is set to intensify this summer.
