Car crashes into train in Wapello County, 1 airlifted to hospital

WAPELLO COUNTY, Iowa — A passenger was airlifted to an Iowa City hospital after the vehicle she was in crashed into a train in Wapello County.

At around 4:40 p.m. Monday evening, a 2004 Buick sedan was traveling southbound on 215th Avenue near Ottumwa. According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, the driver of the vehicle didn’t stop at a railroad crossing and was struck by an oncoming train.

The driver and the rear passenger of the Buick weren’t injured in the crash, the report states; however, the front passenger, identified as a 57-year-old woman from North Carolina, sustained serious injuries and was life flighted to the University of Iowa Hospital for treatment.

No additional information has been released.
