5 injured during crash that left car flipped, submerged in water

MITCHELLVILLE, Iowa — Five people were injured during a crash that resulted in one car being flipped and submerged in water outside Mitchellville.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, deputies were called to the intersection of NW 112th Street and East University Avenue on a two-car crash with one car flipped over and submerged in water.

Mitchellville, Altoona, and Pleasant Hill EMS were called to the scene to provide first aid. Upon arrival, witnesses and a deputy were able to flip the submerged vehicle over onto its wheels.

An adult male was removed from the car in the water and was life-flighted to a local hospital. Authorities say he is in stable condition. Two adults and two children from the other vehicle received minor injuries and were taken to the hospital via ambulance.

 The Iowa State Patrol has opened an investigation into this incident.
