AMES, Iowa — The last weekend of the Summer Iowa Games is finally here, and an estimated 10,000 athletes have turned out to put their skills to the test.
The Iowa Games kicked off in 1987 as a way to bring weekend athletes, children, senior citizens, and more together for an Olympic-style competition. This year, the games have drawn an estimated 10,000 participants from ages 3 to 90 across 93 Iowa counties.
“We have sports for everybody and, you know, there are competitive sports, but we also have sports where a lot of individual sports, and we have, you know, we have walking and things of that nature. So, it’s not all where you have to, you know, compete and break a hard sweat and all that,” said Chuck Long, the CEO of the Iowa Sports Foundation.
Added in 2001, Fencing is a popular event in the games. Johnston resident Eric Ray just got home from competing in the summer championships in Milwaukee.
“I actually won gold two years ago, so there’s an amazing photo of me with the gold medal. Maybe this year will be another one,” said Ray. “I don’t know, but I’ll be happy. There are some great competitors out here today.”
The Iowa Games last day is Sunday, with events starting at 8 a.m. and wrapping up at 6 p.m. Keep updated on events at the Iowa Games website.
