Madison County Treasurer resigns nearly seven months after arrest

MADISON COUNTY, Iowa — Days before a scheduled hearing to potentially remove her from office, embattled Madison County Treasurer Amanda DeVos has officially resigned.

DeVos, 38, is facing multiple charges connected to her time in office, including Felonious Misconduct in Office, Tampering with Records, Fraudulent Practice in the third degree, and third-degree Theft.

Former Madison County Treasurer Amanda DeVos

Madison County Attorney Stephen Swanson said he received DeVos’ resignation letter on Monday, July 14, roughly three months after he told WHO 13’s Katie Kaplan that he had requested it.

According to a release, it states: “I, Amanda DeVos, on the advice of Counsel, and admitting no
wrongdoing, do hereby resign my office of Madison County Treasure (sic), Effective July
14, 2025.

Previously Swanson had told WHO 13 that DeVos had refused to issue her resignation and had continued collecting her paycheck and benefits, which forced him to file a Ch. 66 petition in April to have her forcefully removed. In the same filing, he also petitioned for an injunction that would prohibit DeVos from being paid by the county. A judge granted that injunction.

The resignation makes her upcoming hearing to remove her moot. The Madison County Board of Supervisors, which is involved in a separate investigation, is expected to formally accept her resignation during the regularly scheduled meeting on Tues., July 22. Her criminal trial is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 16 in Boone County after her attorney successfully requested a change of venue.

According to online court records, the case appears to be in the discovery stages with DeVos’ attorney requesting copies of a wide array of materials from the prosecution, including DeVos’ interview with Madison County Sheriff Jason Barnes the day before her arrest, any 911 calls regarding the case, and other evidence intended to be used against her in court.
