ALBIA, Iowa — Officials have confirmed that human remains were discovered in the rubble of a historic building that was destroyed by fire Monday in Albia.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said that the remains were located around 8:47 a.m. on Tuesday in the building at 14 Washington Avenue E on the town square.
One tenant of the building had been unaccounted for following the fire. No names will be released until identification of the remains is made with the help of the State Medical Examiner’s Office, and the family has been notified.
The R.O. Cramer building was gutted by the fire that began Monday morning. When firefighters arrived, heavy black smoke was coming from the roof. They fought the fire throughout the day and into the night to contain the flames.
The building housed apartments on its upper level and businesses on the lower level.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Albia Fire Department, the Albia Police Department, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of ADLM Emergency Management Agency
