DES MOINES, Iowa — The 19th Reggie Sleepout takes place at Drake Stadium Saturday night, spreading awareness for those who age out of the foster care system.
The Sleepout honors Reggie Kelsey, a young man who aged out of the foster care system in 2001. Without resources and support, Reggie constantly worried about how he would survive on his own and was in and out of shelters. Only a few months after leaving foster care, Reggie was found dead in the Des Moines River.
Saturday night hundreds with gather at Drake Stadium in boxes, tents, and sleeping bags. The event cannot replace the feel and uncertainty of being homeless, but it can provide some insight into the lives of people who are not fortunate enough to have a home.
Participants are invited to make posters and learn about breaking the stigma against the homeless, write on the gratitude wall, put together a breathing beads keychain, and help color a “mural” made by local artist Siricasso.
Youth and Shelter Services (YSS) helped develop the Iowa Aftercare Services Network, which provides services to those who age out of foster care. Since Reggie’s Sleepout began in 2006 over $2 million has been raised for Iowa Homeless Youth Centers. The money raised goes towards helping the homeless youth achieve independence and self-sufficiency.
