GREENFIELD, Iowa — Severe storms that powered through central Iowa overnight brought down trees across the city of Greenfield.
Greenfield recently commemorated its one-year anniversary since the deadly tornadoes of 2024.
Sally Gruss, a Greenfield resident who had a tree fall over and block the road during Thursday evening storms, said the storm reminded her of last year.
“I kept hearing that, you know, there was maybe be tornadic activity going on. So that was really scary because we lived through the other one and had no damage. So I thought, they’re going to get the west side this time,” Gruss said.
Gruss said the city and volunteer fire department came out to clear the debris from her fallen tree at 1:30 in the morning.
John Schildberg, a Greenfield resident who lost a tree in his backyard due to the night’s severe storms, said that the storm brought back painful memories.
“It brought back the real sorrowful memories of. We were out within about 15 minutes of when it went through, driving around, and people were in shock walking up the street,” Schildberg said.
Schildberg said he was thankful for the city’s help removing debris that blocked the road in front of his home.
“They do a fabulous job. Yeah, of course. They have a lot of practice from last year, so. Yeah, you know, that’s good,” Schildberg said.
