High winds lead to several grain cars derailing in Mitchellville

MITCHELLVILLE, Iowa — High winds from overnight storms led to several grain cars derailing in Mitchellville.

Mitchellville Police Chief Bill Daggett said the department received a report stating that three grain cars had derailed just east of the CO-OP and that one of the cars was blocking a portion of Arch Avenue NE. According to Chief Daggett, it’s believed that high winds from the overnight storms pushed the empty cars, which gained speed, until they hit the automatic derailleur on the tracks, causing them to derail.

Chief Daggett said workers with the Iowa Interstate Railroad were able to place two cars back onto the tracks by locomotive. As of 12:30 p.m., workers were in the process of lifting the third car onto the tracks.

Arch Avenue NE between 2nd Street NE and Mill Street SE is closed as railroad crews work to put the third car back onto the tracks. Chief Daggett said the road is expected to be reopened no later than 2 p.m.
