Living History Farms to host regional contest for Scripps National Spelling Bee

URBANDALE, Iowa — A regional spelling bee is coming back to central Iowa thanks to a new partnership.

Living History Farms announced it’s now a regional partner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. It will be hosting a regional bee representing 74 Iowa counties next year.

Scripps hasn’t had a regional partner in Iowa since 2017, barring many kids from taking part in the national bee according to Mary Brooks, head judge of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and Iowa resident.

Brooks said she’s “beyond elated that Living History Farms is providing the chance for this to, once again, happen. This is a perfect match between these two educational organizations.”

Registration for schools will open on August 19.

The regional bee will be at Living History Farms on March 7. The regional champion will compete in the national bee in Washington D.C. at the end of May.
