Heavy rain to round out the week in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — More storms are ahead, and more heavy rain chances as we head from Thursday morning into the weekend.

Western Iowa is in a slight risk for severe storms late tonight and early Thursday as they roll in from the west. Wind and hail would be the main threats. It appears there’ll be a break late Thursday afternoon before more storms move in at some point late Thursday night or Friday morning. The slideshow below walks you through the timing of the waves of storms.

The European model’s precipitation output through Sunday morning follows. Storms will be slow-moving Thursday night and Friday morning and more likely to produce a lot of rain. I talked recently about precipitable water, the measure of moisture in the atmospheric column above us. The rule of thumb I learned back in college is that your maximum isolated heavy rainfall amounts will be 2-3 times that number. Our precipitable water for the next 2-2.5 days will be close to 2 inches, so it’s possible we’ll see isolated amounts of 4-6″ of rainfall between now and Sunday morning.

Note that the extended outlook does keep rain chances in through the first part of the day on Saturday. Hopefully this will be the end of our rain chances until the following Tuesday.

Highs for the next 6 days are in the slideshow above, and your WHO 13 7-day forecasts below. Remember to stay weather aware tomorrow morning through Saturday morning for flooding. Turn around don’t drown … it only takes about a foot of water to push a car off of a roadway if it’s moving fast enough. Flooding is the second deadliest type of weather phenomenon in the U.S. in an average year, behind heat and ahead of tornadoes and hurricanes. And we’ve unfortunately seen examples of that in recent times.
