Iowa veteran makes it to Vermont on the Appalachian Trail

WHO 13 NEWS – Iowa veteran Joedy VanVelzen surpassed 1,700 miles hiking the Appalachian Trail: an expedition that extends nearly 2,200 miles between Georgia and Maine and passes through 14 states.

VanVelzen is currently making his way through Vermont. He reports beautiful views in the state, but also says mud from recent rain showers can slow them down at times.

VanVelzen is still hiking veterans through Warrior Expeditions. He says they’re able to add up all the miles on the trail thanks to veteran community supporters along the way that allow them to slack pack multiple days, as well as provide meals, showers, laundry, and a good bed a night.

He also posted a thank you to his wife and daughters back home for encouraging and motivating him every step of the way.

VanVelzen will be in New Hampshire next and has less than 500 miles to go until the finish line in Maine.
