WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — A local shelter is empty after they found foster homes for their animals to spend the holiday weekend in.
Furry Friends spent the week finding foster homes for their animals in an effort to keep them comfortable over the weekend.
The shelter is located across the street from where West Des Moines sets off its fireworks display. Staff says it’s too close for comfort and puts unnecessary stress on the animals.
“Unfortunately, this event is terrible for the animals. Fireworks are always difficult, and there are fireworks in the neighborhood. This display shakes the entire building, said Britt Gagne, with Furry Friends Animal Shelter. “We watch them light the fireworks from our front window, see the people lighting them up. It’s just way too close for these animals who have already been through a lot of trauma.”
The shelter had enough applicants to empty their shelter and give all their animals a stay-cation that will last through the weekend.
