WHITTEMORE, Iowa — A Whittemore man was killed during a fireworks accident in Kossuth County on Tuesday evening.
According to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, their dispatch center received a 911 call of a fireworks accident at the corner of 5th Street and Kossuth Avenue just before 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The caller reported that a male was unconscious and had sustained injuries while shooting off fireworks.
Whittemore and Kossuth County EMS, along with Kossuth County SO, responded to the scene. Air Med 3 Helicopter from Mercy Hospital in Mason City was also paged to respond.
33-year-old Patrick Prentice, of Whittemore, was transported to Kossuth Regional Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities say the accident occurred as a result of Prentice holding a launcher tube while lighting fireworks. Prentice has been taken to the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny.
The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Kossuth County Medical Examiner’s Office in the investigation.
